Cape Hauy is spectacular, but it’s also the hardest hike of the Three Capes Track.

The views are unreal, with massive sea cliffs and the famous Totem Pole sea stack standing straight up out of the ocean. But it’s steep, with heapsss of stairs (our legs were dead at the end, worth it though!).

There are 2 ways to get there:

  • 10 km return hike (4 hours) from Fortescue Bay.

  • 16 km hike (7 hours) from Bare Knoll to Fortescue Bay via Cape Hauy.

We did the 16 km route, as we were camping in Bare Knoll. We did Cape Pillar the day before and it was roughhh, so consider doing it from Fortescue Bay and rest up a bit more between the two Capes if you can!

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • It’s short on paper, but challenging due to the endless stairs

  • Very exposed, bring water and wind protection

  • Track is well-built and clearly marked

  • Option to leave your pack at the junction rest area

  • One of the busiest sections of the Three Capes Track

TO ACCESS

  • Park pass required, book camping if you want to stay in Fortescue Bay, but no camping fees at Bare Knoll (it’s free)

  • All food, water management, and gear must be carried
