This is one of the best and easiest wildlife experiences we’ve ever had in the Philippines!
You literally walk off the beach, put your mask on, and find yourself in the middle of a swirling wall of sardines. And it’s free! No tour needed either.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The sardines are just a few metres from shore, usually near Panagsama Beach (behind Chili Bar).
It’s free, no ticket or guide needed, just bring your snorkel gear.
Huge schools of sardines move as one, it feels like being inside a bait ball.
Turtles often hang around the same spot.
Best visibility is in the morning when the water is calmer.
TO ACCESS
Base yourself in Moalboal, about 3–4 hrs south of Cebu City by bus or van.
From town it’s a short walk or tricycle ride to the beach.
Snorkel gear can be rented in Moalboal for ₱300–₱400, but we recommend bringing your own mask and just hiring fins.
GOOD TO KNOW
There might be some jellyfish in the area. Their sting is pretty much harmless, other than a rash/redness for a couple of hours.
Stay alert for passing boats. We felt safe, but it’s still the open ocean.
Crowds aren’t a huge issue since the sardines cover such a wide area.
You only need a couple of hours here, but it’s an easy experience to do more than once while staying in Moalboal.
