Crete is considered one of the safest destinations in Europe. Life is generally mellow, laid-back, people like to enjoy their lives.
Statistically, the overall crime rates are very low. This practically means that apart from being generally cautious (as you would in any other place in the world, really), there isn’t much to worry about. It’s safe to walk alone during daylight and time, physical or verbal attack risk due to skin colour, ethnic origin, gender or religion is extremely low, vandalism and theft are rare situations. Being generally cautious would basically mean:
- locking your car when leaving
- watching your stuff when walking around crowded spots in cities
- avoiding sketchy parts of cities
actually, a real safety threat is out on the streets: driving in Crete can potentially be a dangerous situation, but I’m referring to that on the “Driving in Crete” tip.
Therefore, if you’re considering going solo in Crete, it’s a great idea. Solo traveling involves requesting the help of locals. You’ll be surprised by how keen Cretans are in going the extra mile in order to help a stranger they’ve never seen in their lives and will probably never see again.
