Berggasthaus Ebenalp is a mountain hotel and restaurant near the top of the Ebenalp cable car. Even if you aren't eating there, there is a great viewpoint along the cliffs near the restaurant.

Note: This is not the famous Aescher cliff restaurant, which is a short hike down the cliffs below. But the Ebenalp restaurant is also a good option for lunch or fun place for an overnight stay.

The Ebenalp restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating with a spectacular view of the Alpstein mountain range. They serve typical Swiss dishes like Cordo-bleu, Brauwurst, and Raclette as well as regional classics like Appenzeller Chäshörnli with homemade applesauce.

Just a few steps from the restaurant, there is a fenced viewpoint at the cliff's edge, where you can peer down to the Seealpsee lake and get a nice view up to the Säntis peak.

Overnight stay

The hotel has private rooms with single, double and triple beds. They also have dormitory rooms (aka Matratzenlager) with simple bunk beds. Prices are per person and include breakfast. They expect you to eat dinner at the restaurant, but that is paid separately.

You reach this hotel via the Ebenalp cable car - Schwendetalstrasse 82, 9057 Wasserauen. Then a 5 min walk above the cable car station.

By train: Wasserauen, Bahnhof station. From Appenzell 25 min, Zurich 1h50.

By car: Park at the large metered lots next to the Ebenalp cable car. Pay by coin or parking app. From Zurich 1h15.
