Paul do Mar is a tiny, working fishing village on Madeira's southwest coast, so expect pebble beaches, dramatic cliffs and powerful surf rather than a sandy resort. If you drive, bring a small car and arrive early because the coastal road is narrow and parking is limited; there is also a regular bus from Funchal if you prefer not to worry about driving. The town is best for surfers and photographers, and for simple, excellent seafood at a handful of local restaurants that can get busy or close early, so plan meals in advance. Swimming can be choppy and the shore is pebbly, so check sea conditions and local advice before getting in; otherwise it makes a peaceful base for short coastal walks and sunset views.
