Documents & Requirements

  • A valid passport is required for all travelers.

  • Most nationalities don’t need a visa for tourist stays under 90 days (check before you go).

  • You’ll receive a PDI slip (in Chile) or entry stamp — don’t lose it, you’ll need it to exit.

Border Crossing Points

  • Popular crossings for travelers include:

    • Paso Río Don Guillermo (Cerro Castillo → El Calafate area) – common for Torres del Paine ↔ El Calafate.

    • Paso Integración Austral (Punta Arenas → Río Gallegos) – main route in southern Patagonia.

    • Paso Cardenal Samoré (Bariloche → Osorno) – northern Patagonia.

Time & Delays

  • Borders can take 10 minutes to 2+ hours depending on the season.

  • Holidays and high season (Dec–Feb) mean longer lines.

Food & Customs Rules

  • Chile has strict agricultural controls — no fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, seeds, or dairy products allowed to enter the country.

  • Packaged, sealed snacks are usually fine. Declare everything to avoid fines! They might ask you to fill in an online form at the border, and this is where you need to declare everything because they will most likely search your vehicle afterwards - and if you have not declared all the organic goods you are carrying, you will pay a fine.

  • Argentina has strict controls on leather products.

Transport Tips

  • If driving a rental car, ensure your contract allows border crossings — you’ll need extra paperwork from the rental company in advance. The papers for border crossing usually cost around 100 USD on top of your car rental price.

Practical Advice

  • Some border towns are tiny — don’t expect services beyond a café or convenience store.

  • Always check current opening hours; some crossings close at night or during snow.
