Okunoin Temple at Rengein Tanjoji is a site of great religious, historical, and traditional importance. It was founded by Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most revered persons in the history of Japan. In this sacred place lies Kobo Daishi's mausoleum, which many believe he is in eternal meditation awaiting the Buddha of the Future. There is a two kilometer path leading to the mausoleum that contains nearly 200,000 tombs belonging to prominent monks and the powerful of ages past. Visitors can explore the graveyard, bow across the Ichinohashi Bridge to pay respect to Kobo Daishi, and even challenge themselves to lift the Miroku Stone from its cage with only one hand. Plus, visitors are invited to prayerfully throw water at the statues of Jizo as an offering for loved ones who have departed. It's an extraordinary destination - so don't miss it!
