Why I think families and travelers should visit the Old Quarter (Khu Phố Cổ Hà Nội):
For me, Hanoi’s Old Quarter is the perfect place to truly feel Vietnam. It’s buzzing, vibrant, and full of culture - real life happens right there on the streets. Locals cook, eat, work, and chat outside their homes while travelers move through the same narrow lanes. That mix of everyday local life and tourism is what makes this area so fascinating and alive.
Walking through the Old Quarter helped me understand the country better than any museum could. It’s loud, chaotic, colorful, incredibly authentic and once you experience it, Hanoi just makes sense. (Love it or hate it)
As a family, we found it exciting but also important to stay alert. Scooters are everywhere - on the roads, on the sidewalks, sometimes right beside you. I always keep the kids close and hold their hands, especially when crossing streets.
My best tip: don’t wait for traffic to stop - it won’t. Walk slowly and confidently into the street, keep a steady pace, and the scooters will flow around you. It feels scary at first, but it actually works.
The Old Quarter is intense, full of energy, and completely unforgettable – and for me, it’s the heart of Hanoi. 🛵✨
