What to expect:

Okay, I'll admit it, the pile-dwelling village isn't actually in Switzerland. It's Germany - but only a short drive/boat ride away.

But I'd still like to include it here as a little bonus.

Step back in time on the shores of Lake Constance at this incredible open-air museum, where you can walk through reconstructed Stone and Bronze Age villages built on stilts over the water. You'll wander along wooden boardwalks, peeking into the daily lives of people who lived here thousands of years ago. It’s a fascinating glimpse into a submerged world, and the setting right on the lake is absolutely beautiful.

How to get here:

The easiest way is to drive there and park at the “Parkplatz am See” parking lot. From there, it's about a 10-minute walk. You can drive there via Schaffhausen or via Konstanz and then take the ferry across Lake Constance, which is a highlight of the trip in itself. You can buy the ferry ticket right there at the harbor (about 25 Euros for a family + car).

1.5h drive from Zurich.

Notes:

There is a nice playground next to the open air museum.
