The most storied hotel in Thailand, on the banks of the Chao Phraya since 1876. Past guests include Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, and Graham Greene — and the Authors' Wing is where you have afternoon tea even if you're not staying (reservations essential, around 2,500 THB). Rooms in the new River Wing have river-facing balconies and deep soaking tubs. The free shuttle boat across the river to their spa is a 5-minute ride that alone is worth the stay. Book a Deluxe River View Room minimum; the Authors' Suites start around 30,000 THB/night. Breakfast on the terrace is a ritual — go before 9 AM for the quietest tables and best light on the river.
