Madeira is a spectacular island, overflowing with stunning landscapes and unforgettable viewpoints at every turn. Unlike traditional beach resort destinations where travellers stay put at a hotel, Madeira invites exploration. Its rugged coastline, lush mountains, and charming villages make it an adventurer’s paradise, where each corner offers something new to discover.
To fully appreciate the island’s beauty, it’s essential to get out and explore, as staying in one spot would mean missing out on the very essence of what makes Madeira so special.
If you’re looking for the freedom to explore at your own pace and see as much as possible in a short amount of time, renting a car is undoubtedly the best choice. With a vehicle at your disposal, you can easily access the island's most iconic sites and hidden gems, ensuring you experience everything Madeira has to offer.

But even if you prefer not to drive, don’t worry! Madeira’s public transport system connects you to many of the island’s most important places, making it entirely possible to have an incredible experience without getting behind the wheel. Whether by car or bus, one thing is certain—exploring Madeira is a must, and it will undoubtedly be the highlight of your trip.

With a Car

Renting a car on Madeira is the ultimate way to explore the island with flexibility and ease. It’s especially valuable outside the summer season when the weather can vary dramatically—allowing you to adjust plans and drive to sunnier areas within the hour. Some of Madeira’s most stunning spots, like Fanal or remote levadas, are inaccessible by public transport, and driving gets you there faster.
While parking can occasionally be tricky, the freedom to go where you want, when you want, makes a rental car an excellent choice for your Madeira adventure.

Without a Car

Travelling around Madeira without a car is slower but offers its own unique charm. Public buses connect many towns and popular trails, giving you a taste of local life. While routes may take longer and not reach every destination, they’re a budget-friendly and relaxed way to explore the island.
If you’re not comfortable driving Madeira’s steep roads, don’t worry—there’s still plenty to see and do using buses, transfers and guided tours. You can enjoy Madeira’s beauty at a leisurely pace, even without being behind the wheel.
