What Type of Car to Rent?

When renting a car on Madeira, smaller cars are often the best option due to the island’s narrow streets, especially in older towns and villages. A compact car, like a Renault Clio, is ideal for getting around without worrying too much about manoeuvring through tight spaces or steep inclines.

Engine Power

Opt for a car with at least 70 horsepower to comfortably navigate the island’s hilly terrain. A car with a stronger engine will ensure you don’t struggle up Madeira’s steep roads.

Insurance

Given the narrow streets and the potential for minor scrapes or scratches, it’s highly recommended to opt for additional insurance that covers mirrors, wheels, and windows.
