Madeira’s public transport system offers a variety of ways to explore the island without the need for a car. While it may take a little extra planning, these options provide a budget-friendly and enjoyable way to discover the island. From convenient city buses to scenic cable cars, public transport allows you to immerse yourself in Madeira’s charm and unique landscapes.

Yellow City Buses

Run by Horários do Funchal, these buses operate only within Funchal, making it easy to visit Monte, the Botanical Garden, and Formosa Beach.

Intermunicipal Buses

These connect Funchal to other towns and regions on the island, operated by companies under the SIGA network.

Aerobus

A shuttle service connecting Madeira’s airport to Funchal. It’s a convenient option for travellers arriving or departing, with affordable one-way tickets.

Cable Cars and Ferry

A highlight of Madeira’s landscape, cable cars like those to Monte or Garajau offer stunning views from above. For an island-hopping experience, a ferry provides access to neighbouring Porto Santo.

Using Public Transport

Up until mid-2024, getting around Madeira by public transport was challenging. The island was served by four different bus companies, each operating independently with their own pricing structures and timetables scattered across various websites. Travellers had to be well-informed about which company operated in which area just to plan a simple journey.

This changed in mid-2024 with the introduction of SIGA, a unified public transport system that has streamlined bus services, making travel across the island more accessible and user-friendly.

SIGA now encompasses:

• 🟡 Horários do Funchal: Serving Funchal and Curral das Freiras

• 🔵 SIGA Rodoeste: Covering the western part of the island

• ⚫️ CAM: Operating in the eastern regions

What to Expect

Many destinations in Madeira are easily accessible by public transport, but travellers should keep in mind:

• Longer Travel Times: Buses often take longer routes with multiple stops, so journeys will take more time compared to driving.

• Less Frequent Services: Some areas have limited bus schedules, so planning ahead is essential.

• Fewer Activities in a Day: Due to longer travel times and schedules, you might not cover as much ground as you would with a car.

Don’t despair—travelling by bus has its own charm. It offers a more authentic and local experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the culture and perhaps strike up conversations with residents. It's a slower pace that can make your journey more about the experience than just the destination.
