Madeira’s hiking network is truly world-class, attracting nature lovers and adventurers from across the globe. Trails lead through ancient forests, along cliffside paths, and over mountain ridges — making hiking one of the island’s most memorable experiences. Before you hit the trails, though, it’s good to know a few key things about how the system works.

Vereda vs. Levada: What’s the Difference?

  1. Levadas are man-made irrigation channels designed to transport water from the island's wetter north to its drier south. These channels, some dating back to the 15th century, have been adapted into hiking paths, allowing visitors to explore Madeira's lush interiors.

  2. Veredas, on the other hand, are natural footpaths that traverse Madeira's diverse terrain. These trails often connect villages, peaks, and scenic viewpoints, leading through mountainous regions or along coastal cliffs. Veredas tend to be more physically demanding, with steeper ascents and descents, offering an adventurous experience for hikers.

Check Trail Status Before You Go

Madeira’s unpredictable weather and frequent maintenance mean some trails may be temporarily closed. It’s crucial to check the trail status before heading out to avoid disappointment or unnecessary risks. You can find up-to-date information on open and closed trails here.

What Happens If You Ignore the Warnings?

Trails marked as closed are strictly off-limits for safety reasons. Hikers caught on closed trails will face fines of up to €500. Moreover, if you require emergency assistance from a helicopter on a restricted route, you will be charged a substantial rescue fee— a recent policy aimed at discouraging risky behaviour. Additionally, if an accident occurs on an officially closed trail, travel insurance will not cover any medical or rescue expenses, leaving hikers fully responsible for the costs.
