Choosing the Best Base on Madeira
Whether you’re renting a car or relying on public transport, where you stay on the island can make a big difference in your experience.
Madeira might be small, but its diverse landscapes and winding roads make it a destination perfect for exploration. If you plan to rent a car, the good news is that you can easily base yourself in one location and still reach every corner of the island.
If you have a car, Funchal or nearby Caniço make a great base. The island's capital offers the best starting point for daily excursions, thanks to its central location and well-maintained roads. From here, you can reach almost anywhere on Madeira in about an hour, making it easy to explore everything from the lush Laurisilva forests in the north to the sunny beaches of the south.
Since Madeira is compact, a single accommodation can serve as your base for the entire trip. This not only simplifies your stay but also allows you to enjoy the comforts of one place while still having the freedom to explore the island’s hidden gems. Plus, by staying in the southern part of the island, you’ll benefit from the drier, sunnier weather that this region is known for.
While Funchal and Caniço are often the top choice, Calheta, Machico, or Ponta do Sol also make great bases, offering milder weather year-round. These spots are particularly attractive if you want a quieter stay without straying too far from the island’s highlights.
For those who prefer to rely on public transport, choosing the right location is even more crucial. Public transport on Madeira is reliable but more limited outside the main urban areas, making your accommodation choice important for accessing the island's attractions.
Staying in Funchal is the most convenient option if you plan to get around by bus. As the hub of Madeira’s bus network, Funchal offers the best connections to various parts of the island. From here, you can easily reach popular spots like Cabo Girão, Machico, Caniçal, the scenic village of Câmara de Lobos, or take a trip up to Monte.
If you stay elsewhere on the island, you’ll often need to travel to Funchal first before catching a connecting bus to your final destination, which can make for longer travel times. Therefore, Funchal is the most practical choice for those looking to explore without a car.
If you want to experience the more remote beauty of Madeira’s north, consider adding a short stay in Seixal or Porto Moniz. Spending one or two nights in these northern towns can provide a different perspective on the island’s landscapes and a chance to explore the rugged coastline and volcanic rocks.
This can be particularly helpful as bus services in the north can be limited, especially in the late afternoons. For example, if you’re in Seixal or São Vicente and plan to return to Funchal in the late afternoon, be aware that the last buses may leave earlier than you’d like, making a second base up north a good option to avoid travel stress.
For those seeking the best weather, the southern side of Madeira—including Funchal, Caniço, Calheta, Machico, and Ponta do Sol—is the way to go. These areas enjoy milder and less rainy conditions throughout the year, offering sunny days great for exploring or relaxing by the ocean.
On the other hand, if you’re drawn to cooler, cloudier weather and enjoy the tranquillity of nature, consider a stay in the north. Places like São Vicente, Seixal, Boaventura or Ponta Delgada offer a different pace of life, where you can immerse yourself in Madeira’s lush greenery and enjoy a more laid-back atmosphere.
While there are many options for accommodation on Madeira, we generally recommend choosing one place to stay throughout your trip if you’re renting a car. It keeps things simple and allows you to focus on exploring the island rather than moving between different lodgings. For those looking for the perfect blend of convenience, climate, and access to Madeira’s attractions, Funchal or Caniço on the southern side of the island are excellent choices. These locations offer easy access to the whole island and boast the best weather year-round.
Moreover, if you’re seeking an energetic atmosphere with plenty of tourist activities, such as events, a wide selection of restaurants and bars, and the chance to enjoy evening strolls without needing a car, Funchal is ideal. The island’s capital has the most to offer in terms of nightlife and cultural experiences, making it perfect for travellers who want to mix exploration with a lively social scene.
