Tucked between dramatic cliffs and the Atlantic, Porto da Cruz is a peaceful village on Madeira’s north coast that’s perfect for slowing down and soaking up authentic island life. While it doesn’t have sandy beaches, the volcanic shoreline and ocean views are truly stunning — especially when the waves crash against the black rocks.
The village is best known for its old rum distillery ("Engenho do Norte"), where you can see how Madeira’s sugarcane rum is still produced using steam-powered machinery. The sweet, earthy scent of molasses often fills the air — and yes, there are tastings!
A big highlight is the saltwater swimming complex right by the ocean, offering two natural-style pools with incredible views. It’s a great spot for a refreshing dip on a hot day, even if the sea is too rough to swim in. The pools are family-friendly and there’s a relaxed atmosphere, with a café-bar nearby.
Good to know:
– The surf here is popular with beginners, and there’s a small surf school near the beach.
– Porto da Cruz makes a lovely lunch stop on a drive along the north coast. Try some fresh limpets or a cold Coral beer with a sea view.
– It's also the starting or ending point of the Vereda do Larano hike — one of Madeira’s most scenic coastal trails.
🚌 How to get there: Buses run from Funchal and Machico, or you can stop by as part of a northern loop by car.
🏊♂️ Pools: Open seasonally, with a small entrance fee (cash recommended).
