❗️Trail Update: The PR1 trail is currently only partially open. As of now, hikers can access the short stretch from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (1.2 km). The rest of the trail remains closed due to damage caused by wildfires in 2024. Full reopening is planned for April 2026, pending final safety and infrastructure checks.
When it reopens, PR1 will be part of Madeira’s new regulated trail system. This means:
Advance reservation of a time slot will be required for all hikers,
Entry fee:
€10.50 per person,
or €7.00 when hiking with a certified guide or operator registered with IFCN,
Booking and payment must be made online via SIMplifica Madeira.
Always check the latest conditions before your hike via the official IFCN Madeira website:

Trail Overview
PR1 is one of Madeira’s most iconic and challenging routes, connecting two of the island’s highest peaks: Pico do Areeiro (1818 m) and Pico Ruivo (1862 m). The full trail runs along a dramatic mountain ridge with steep ascents, tunnels, and breathtaking panoramic views. Its total length is approximately 8 km one way, and it’s best suited for hikers with good physical condition, proper gear, and no fear of heights.
