Ponta do Bode is a unique and protected ecosite located on the northern slope of the parish of Caniçal in Madeira. It’s known for its distinctive reddish tones that give the area an almost mystical atmosphere, which has led to it being nicknamed ‘Mars in Madeira’. The name ‘Ponta do Bode’ is derived from a local legend about a goat (‘bode’ in Portuguese) that accidentally fell from the cliffs in this area. This site is also significant for its geodiversity, being one of the most important examples of the geological processes of sedimentology and stratigraphy on the island.

It comprises two different geosites: one where the Upper Volcanic Complex surfaces, making it an ideal place to observe spheroidal disjunction, and another that allows the observation of a ‘dykes in dykes’ complex, related to the fissural volcanism zone.
