Located to the west of the center of Funchal, in the São Martinho parish, we find the largest public beach in Madeira. Praia Formosa – which translates to "Beautiful Beach" – is actually a complex composed of four beaches. It's only a 10-minute drive from the city center and is one of the most popular bathing spots in the entire region.
With a combination of pebbles and black sand, its area stretches for 2 kilometers, attracting hundreds of bathers daily, both residents and tourists. Praia Formosa is an option for spending a whole day or a quick retreat for a swim after hours of wandering and exploring the island. How refreshing it feels to exercise in our waters and then enjoy a beer or a "poncha" at the adjacent bars while the last rays of sun dry your skin.
At this public beach, which is freely accessible, the safety of bathers during the bathing season is guaranteed by a team of lifeguards. There are also various facilities to ensure a pleasant day at the beach, such as parking, changing rooms and first aid station.
