This scenic trail offers one of Madeira’s most picturesque levada walks, weaving through lush forests and dramatic landscapes. Starting at Ribeiro Frio, the hike takes you along the Levada do Furado, a serene irrigation channel surrounded by native Laurissilva forest, part of Madeira’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail provides mesmerising views of deep valleys, jagged peaks, and cascading waterfalls, making it a photographer’s paradise.
The trail begins at Ribeiro Frio, easily accessible by bus number 56 from Funchal. After finishing the hike in Portela, return to Funchal via bus number 53. The Portela bus stop is conveniently located across from the restaurant Portela e Vista.

Trail Fee: From 1 January 2026, a €4.50 fee per person applies to this trail. A reduced rate of €3 is available when hiking with a certified local guide.
