White Sands National Park Alamogordo, New Mexico
There is nowhere in the world quite like White Sands. The park protects the largest gypsum dune field on earth — 275 square miles of blindingly white sand that looks and feels nothing like a typical desert. The dunes are soft underfoot, cool to the touch even in summer, and shift constantly — the most active move up to 30 feet per year. Walking out into the middle of them, surrounded by nothing but white in every direction under a blue sky, produces a quiet disorientation that is completely unlike any other landscape in the American West. It's also one of the most photogenic places on the continent, particularly in the hour before and after sunset.
Cost $25 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. Motorcycles $20, individuals on foot or bike $15. America the Beautiful Pass accepted. No timed entry required.
One Unique Consideration White Sands sits adjacent to White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base. The park occasionally closes for up to two to three hours during missile tests — Highway 70 between Alamogordo and Las Cruces also closes during these windows. Call the visitor center at 575-479-6124 before arriving if you're on a tight schedule. Closures are not predictable but are typically brief.
Best Times to Visit April, May, September, and October offer the most comfortable temperatures and best conditions. Summer days regularly reach 95–110°F — if you visit in summer, arrive in the early morning or plan your visit for the two to three hours before sunset. The park closes and locks its gates overnight, with hours varying by season. Winter is mild and beautiful with far fewer crowds.
Cell Service Little to none throughout the park. No Wi-Fi either. Download maps before entering and bring a paper map — the dunes can be disorienting without landmarks, especially if you wander off trail.
Gas & Food No gas stations and no restaurants inside the park. Light snacks and beverages are available at the visitor center gift shop. Alamogordo is about 15 miles east and has full services. Las Cruces is about 50 miles west. Fill up and eat before entering.
Lodging No lodging inside the park. Alamogordo has the closest hotels and is your most practical base. Las Cruces has a wider selection if you want more options.
Don't Miss Arriving two to three hours before sunset and staying through the golden hour is the single best way to experience White Sands — the light turns the dunes warm shades of gold and pink, the shadows deepen, and the crowds thin. Sledding down the dunes is genuinely fun and plastic sleds are sold at the gift shop. The Dunes Drive is eight miles into the heart of the dune field and accessible to any vehicle. And on full moon nights, the park service offers after-hours bicycle rides along the drive by reservation — an extraordinary experience if you can time your visit around one.
