Canyonlands National Park Moab, Utah
Utah's largest national park and one of its most underrated. Where Arches gets the Instagram fame, Canyonlands gets the serious adventurers — and the payoff is a rawer, quieter, more expansive version of canyon country. The Colorado and Green Rivers carve through over 330,000 acres of red rock wilderness, and the scale of it from the rim is genuinely hard to process. This is big, remote, unforgiving desert, and it rewards people who come prepared.
Cost $30 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. Motorcycles $25, individuals on foot or bike $15. America the Beautiful Pass accepted. No timed entry reservation required.
Know the Districts — They're Separate Trips Canyonlands has four distinct districts with no direct roads connecting them — plan accordingly. Island in the Sky is the most accessible and popular, just 40 minutes from Moab, with paved roads and sweeping panoramic overlooks. The Needles offers colorful rock spires and longer backcountry hiking. The Maze is extremely remote and requires serious 4WD capability and advance planning — it's not a casual stop. Horseshoe Canyon is a separate unit with no entrance fee, home to some of the most significant ancient rock art in North America.
Best Times to Visit Spring and fall are ideal. Summer heat regularly exceeds 100°F with virtually no shade on most trails. Winter can bring freezing temperatures and occasional road closures. May is typically the busiest month.
Cell Service Poor to nonexistent throughout the entire park. Do not rely on GPS navigation or digital maps once inside. Download offline maps, bring a paper map, and let someone know your plans before heading into the backcountry.
Gas, Food & Water Nothing inside the park — no gas, no food, no restaurants. The Needles Outpost just outside the Needles District has fuel and a general store seasonally. Moab is your primary hub for everything, sitting about 32 miles from Island in the Sky. Water is only available seasonally at visitor centers — bring far more than you think you need, even in winter.
Lodging No lodging inside the park. Moab has a full range of hotels, motels, and campgrounds and serves as the base for most visitors. Backcountry camping is available with a permit through Recreation.gov.
Don't Miss Mesa Arch at Island in the Sky is one of the most photographed sunrise spots in the Southwest — the arch frames the canyon below and lights up brilliantly at first light. Grand View Point Overlook is the crown jewel of the paved scenic drive. If you have a capable 4WD vehicle, White Rim Road is a legendary multi-day route that loops the Island in the Sky mesa — one of the great off-road experiences in the country, permit required.
