Despite the epic photos you may have seen online, camping directly at the Sary Jaz viewpoint is not recommended. In the afternoon, strong winds sweep across the exposed plateau, making it difficult to even stand — let alone set up a tent.
If you're planning to overnight in the area, it's better to camp slightly lower or in a more sheltered spot just beyond the viewpoint.
How do I get here?- After passing the first military checkpoint, follow the unmaintained dirt road along the river for about 45 minutes. You’ll then begin driving alongside a wide plateau — this stretch offers your first views of the Tien Shan Mountains in the distance.
As you continue, you may pass a small post with a guard (not always manned). Shortly after, you’ll come over a hill and spot a few small wooden buildings. Just past this point is an open area with enough space to safely pitch your tent, away from the worst of the wind.
