Moraine Lake is one of the most "famous" places to visit in Banff. It is glacier-fed, stunning turquoise, & surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks.
How to Get There
Moraine Lake is located in Banff National Park, about 20 minutes from Lake Louise. Because of heavy visitation & environmental protection efforts, personal vehicles are no longer allowed on Moraine Lake Road during the summer season. Instead, you’ll need to plan ahead using one of these options:
Parks Canada Shuttle: The most straightforward option. Shuttles depart from the Lake Louise Park & Ride & will drop you off directly at the lake.
Roam Transit (Seasonal): Offers service between Banff & Lake Louise, where you can connect to the Parks Canada shuttle.
Commercial Tours: Sunrise tours are especially popular since private vehicles can’t access the lake early in the morning anymore.
Bike the Road For the adventurous—Moraine Lake Road is 12 km (7.5 miles) one way with steady elevation. The reward is arriving under your own power to one of the most iconic lakes in the Rockies.
What to Do
Classic Rockpile Trail: A short, easy walk that leads to the viewpoint. This is the one you’ve seen across social media!
Canoeing: Rent a canoe on the lake (seasonal operation)!!! I feel like this is SUCH a must. I missed out on this due to seasonal closure (I arrived a day or two after it closed, such a bummer). Canoe rentals are available at the Moraine Lake Lodge & at the time of creating this guide, pricing starts from $160 CAD plus tax per canoe for a one-hour rental. Paddles, life jackets and basic instructions are provided.
Sunrise Photography: If you’re a photographer, this is a must-do. The light hits the Ten Peaks in perfect alignment & I recommend you book a sunrise shuttle or tour well in advance. If you are interested in exploring photography, I have linked all the gear I use here!
Wildlife Viewing: Early mornings can bring glimpses of pika, marmots, or even bears at a distance. Stay aware and carry bear spray.
