The Bow Valley Parkway is the quieter, more intimate alternative to the main road between Banff & Lake Louise. It winds through dense forest, follows the curves of the Bow River, & passes beneath towering cliffs that feel incredibly close.

How to Get There

The Bow Valley Parkway runs between Banff & Lake Louise on the north side of the Trans Canada Highway. You can join it from either end, but most people begin in Banff & follow the parkway west. Seasonal closures sometimes restrict vehicle access to protect wildlife, so check conditions before you go. When it is open, it is an easy, scenic drive that rewards you at every turn.

What to Do

• Johnston Canyon
  One of the most popular stops along the parkway. There's a walkway along the canyon where you can view a series of waterfalls! Here's a link to the upper falls

• Castle Mountain Viewpoints
  Castle Mountain rises abruptly from the valley with layered cliffs. There are several pullouts where you can take photos & videos.

• Wildlife Viewing
  This road is well known for wildlife. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, & sometimes bears wander through the valley. Sightings are common, especially early in the morning or in the soft light of evening.

• Picnic Spots
  The Bow Valley Parkway is dotted with quiet picnic areas where you can sit near the river, listen to birds & just enjoy being in the wilderness.

• Cycling the Parkway
  During seasonal vehicle restrictions, the road becomes a great cycling route.
