Cusco completely blew us away. Walking its cobblestone streets felt like stepping straight into history, with ancient Incan ruins woven seamlessly into colourful colonial buildings. Set high in the Andes, this city has such a special energy and quickly became one of our favourite places in Peru.
Things We Loved in Cusco:
Historic Centre & Plaza de Armas – We spent hours wandering around here, soaking up the atmosphere, admiring the architecture, and watching city life unfold from café balconies.
Sacsayhuamán – Visiting these massive Incan ruins overlooking the city was unreal. The scale and precision of the stonework left us speechless.
San Pedro Market – A must-visit. We loved trying fresh juices, local snacks, and wandering through the colourful stalls — it felt so authentic.
Sacred Valley Day Trips – Cusco is the perfect base for exploring the Sacred Valley. Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo were all highlights for us.
Food & Coffee Scene – From cosy cafés to incredible Peruvian restaurants, Cusco’s food scene surprised us in the best way.
Best Hotel:
Antigua Casona San Blas – This place was stunning. A beautifully restored boutique hotel in the San Blas neighbourhood, perfect for a quiet, romantic stay while still close to everything.
Tips for Visiting:
Altitude: Take it slow the first couple of days — coca tea really helps with altitude sickness.
Best time: May to September for dry weather and clear days.
Getting around: The city is very walkable, but taxis are cheap and easy for longer distances.
Essentials: Layers, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a camera — every corner is photo-worthy.
Cusco is the perfect blend of culture, history, and adventure. Between ancient ruins, lively markets, and unforgettable day trips, it’s a city that captures your heart and sets the tone for everything that comes next in Peru.
