Tikal, one of the most incredible archaeological sites in the world. Located in Tikal National Park in northern Guatemala, this UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves the ruins of an ancient Maya city set amid tropical rainforest — and it’s truly breathtaking. The park spans over 57,600 ha of jungle, with towering pyramids, plazas and causeways that reveal how advanced the Maya civilisation was from around 600 BC to 900 AD. Fun fact: the Tikal pyramids were used as filming locations for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, giving the site a real-life “galactic” vibe!
Most people visit Tikal as a day trip from Flores with a guide(this is what we did) — the main gateway town about 65 km away — where tour operators offer transportation, entrance and guides. Standard entrance fees for foreign visitors are around 150 GTQ (~US $20) for regular park access, with optional sunrise or sunset permits costing extra. Guided tours with transport from Flores typically range US $45–$75+ per person and include a certified guide who brings the Maya history alive as you explore the Great Plaza, Temple IV and other monumental structures.
At Tikal, wildlife sightings are part of the experience: you might hear howler monkeys echoing through the canopy, spot spider monkeys, toucan species, and even coatis and ocellated turkeys among the ancient stone pyramids.
Practical tips for Tikal: wear comfortable, breathable clothing and sturdy shoes for lots of walking and climbing, pack insect repellent(there is Dengue Fever here which can be deadly after the second infection), sunscreen and plenty of water.
Whether you’re summiting fire‑spewing Acatenango at sunrise or exploring the ancient heart of Maya civilization (and Star Wars scenery!) at Tikal, Guatemala is full of unforgettable adventures and landscapes that feel almost otherworldly.
