If you’re in El Salvador and want a peaceful escape, Lago de Coatepeque is an amazing spot to visit. It’s a big, volcanic crater lake with super clear blue water, surrounded by green hills - the kind of place that makes you want to sit by the shore and just relax for a while.
Getting there is easy. From Santa Ana, it’s about a 30–40 minute drive, and from San Salvador it’s around 1–1.5 hours. There are lots of places to park if you’re driving, or you can take a bus, shuttle or taxi from nearby towns.
Once you’re there, there’s a lot to do. You can rent a kayak or paddleboard, take a boat ride on the lake, or just walk along the shore and enjoy the views. There are also several restaurants and cafés right by the water where you can sit outside, try local dishes, or sip a coffee while watching the sun reflect off the lake. Some spots even have small beaches if you want to swim or just dip your feet in. (Please note: make sure not to swallow the water, we did hear of people getting sick here!)
We actually didn't end up stopping here as we were heading through to Guatemala next (and was visiting Lake Atitlan there) but heard lots about it and it did seem like a stunning spot if you have time to visit whether its for a day trip or spend a few nights relaxing.
