Mercado Hidalgo is a bustling, iron-roofed city market best visited in the morning when stalls serve fresh breakfasts and the sweets and cajeta the area is known for are at their best. Bring cash and small change because many food stalls and fonditas do not take cards, and be ready to weave through narrow aisles when it gets busy. Try a quick sit-down at one of the small eateries for local specialties, haggle politely on crafts but not on prepared food, and keep your bag zipped and close to you—pickpocketing is rare but crowds are tight.
