San Juan La Laguna, set on the shores of Lake Atitlán and surrounded by volcanoes, completely captured our hearts. This small, peaceful village felt incredibly authentic and was one of our favourite places in Guatemala. It’s known for its strong Mayan culture, vibrant street art, and relaxed lakeside atmosphere, making it the perfect place to slow down and truly soak it all in together.
Things We Loved in San Juan La Laguna:
Strolling the Streets – We spent hours wandering through colourful streets filled with murals, local art, and traditional weaving shops. Every corner felt full of culture and character.
Local Art & Weaving Cooperatives – Visiting women-led weaving cooperatives and learning about natural dyeing techniques was such a special experience.
Coffee & Chocolate Tours – San Juan is known for its organic coffee and chocolate, and doing a local tour was a fun (and delicious) way to support the community.
Lake Atitlán Views – Sitting by the lake with volcano views, especially at sunrise and sunset, was incredibly peaceful and romantic.
Tips for Visiting:
Getting there: Easily reached by boat from Panajachel or other Lake Atitlán villages.
Best time: Dry season from November to April offers the best weather.
Essentials: Comfortable walking shoes, cash for local businesses, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
San Juan La Laguna felt soulful, colourful, and deeply connected to tradition. If you’re visiting Lake Atitlán, this village is an absolute must—especially if you’re looking for culture, community, and a slower pace of travel.
