If you’re in El Salvador and looking for a charming town to explore, Juayúa is one of our favourite stops. It’s a small mountain town with a relaxed vibe, cool weather, and great food — the kind of place you want to spend a day wandering around. We picked to do a day trip from Santa Ana but its also a popular place to spend a few nights or explore La Ruta de Las Flores.
Getting there is pretty easy. From Santa Ana, it’s about a 45-minute drive through scenic hills and farmland. If you’re coming from the coast (like El Tunco or El Zonte), it’s a bit longer — usually around 1.5 to 2 hours — but the ride up the mountains is beautiful and worth it. You can go by car, taxi, bus or shuttle; lots of people do day trips from San Salvador too.
Once you’re in town, start with the Central Plaza — it’s right in the heart of Juayúa and full of local life. Highly recommend to visit on weekends as there’s a food festival (La Ruta de Las Flores) where vendors line the streets with pupusas, grilled meats, fresh fruit juices, and sweet treats. We were amazed at how many different foods you can try in one place.
Juayúa is also a great base for outdoor stuff. A short walk from town gets you to Los Chorros de la Calera (also known as the 7 waterfalls) a set of waterfalls where you can hike and cool off in natural pools. Most hotels and hostels offer tours from neighbouring destinations as well. If you like coffee, there are a few small cafés and coffee farms nearby where you can learn about local beans and enjoy a fresh cup with a view of the mountains.
The town itself has murals painted on buildings, a relaxed pace, and friendly people - perfect for just strolling around, grabbing a bite, and soaking up the atmosphere. Whether you’re into food, nature, or just a slower pace for a day, Juayúa is definitely worth the trip.
