Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is one of Peru’s most jaw-dropping natural sights. Sitting high in the Andes near Cusco, the mountain is famous for its naturally layered rainbow colours, created by mineral deposits that streak across the landscape — and yes, it really does look that wild in real life.
Reaching Vinicunca involves a high-altitude hike, usually done as a day trip from Cusco. The walk itself takes around 1.5–2 hours each way, depending on your pace, and climbs to over 5,000 m above sea level, so it’s challenging but manageable if you take it slow. Along the way, you’ll pass snow-dusted peaks, wide open valleys, and grazing alpacas, which makes the journey just as memorable as the destination.
At the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the colourful mountain and surrounding Andes — one of those moments where you just stop and take it all in. Many tours also include a stop at the Red Valley, which is well worth adding if you have the energy.
Most people visit with a tour, which typically costs around USD $30–$60, including transport, breakfast, and lunch. Warm layers are essential, as temperatures can be freezing, especially in the early morning.
