Guatapé instantly charmed us with its colourful streets and vibrant lakeside views. This small town near Medellín is famous for its zócalos — the decorative murals on every building — and the epic Piedra del Peñol rock nearby.
Things We Loved in Guatapé:
Piedra del Peñol – Climbing the 740 steps to the top of this massive rock was totally worth it. The panoramic views of the lake and islands below were breathtaking.
Colourful Streets – Wandering through the town’s streets, admiring the bright murals on every building, and popping into local cafés made for such a fun and romantic experience.
Lake Activities – We rented a small boat and explored the lakes, stopping at tiny islands and enjoying the calm water and beautiful scenery.
Local Eats – Stopping for fresh juice, empanadas, and local dishes in small restaurants made the town feel even more welcoming. 10000% get the ZOCAROLLS though they are ELITE, its a cinnamon rolls place that put soft serve on top!!!
Chill Vibes – Guatapé has a relaxed pace, perfect for strolling, taking photos, and just soaking in the colourful, lively atmosphere.
Best Hotel:
Hotel Los Recuerdos – Staying here was lovely. Right near the lake with spacious rooms and great views, it was the perfect base for exploring the town and surrounding area. (probably wouldnt recommend staying, not too much to do there, better just doing a day trip)
Tips for Visiting:
Best time: December to March for dry weather and clear views from the rock.
Getting there: About 2 hours from Medellín by car or bus.
Essentials: Comfortable shoes for climbing, sunscreen, a camera for all the colourful streets, and cash for small restaurants and boat rentals.
Guatapé is the perfect mix of adventure, colour, and charm. Between climbing Piedra del Peñol, cruising the lakes, and wandering the vibrant streets, it’s a small town that leaves a big impression.
