If you’re in La Paz and love discovering off‑the‑beaten‑path neighbourhoods with colourful character, Cancha Chualluma is a hidden gem worth checking out. Locals simply call it Chualluma, a hillside area that has been transformed into a vibrant open‑air gallery of murals and street art covering the walls of homes and walkways. It’s a visual feast and one of the city’s most photogenic spots — especially during daylight hours when the colours really pop in photos.

Chualluma sits high above La Paz’s streets, and wandering through its steep lanes gives you great views over the city and surrounding mountains as you explore. The art itself tells stories about local life and culture, and the neighbourhood’s bold colours have turned what was once a quiet residential area into one of La Paz’s most intriguing cultural stops.

Getting here usually involves a walk through residential streets, or you can take the Mi Teleférico (Red Line) toward Estación Cementerio and walk from there — the cable car also gives you stunning panoramas of the cityscape below. As with many urban areas, it’s best to visit during daylight, stick to main paths, and wear comfortable shoes for the steep terrain.

There’s no entrance fee — it’s a living neighbourhood, not a formal attraction — but it rewards curious explorers with colourful murals, local life scenes, and unique views that are perfect for photos or just soaking up the authentic pulse of Bolivia’s vibrant capital.
