If you’re in Huacachina, Peru, one of the most thrilling ways to experience the desert oasis is a sandboarding and dune buggy tour. It’s fast-paced, adrenaline-packed, and honestly just plain fun — whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned sandboarder.

Most tours start with a ride in a 4x4 dune buggy across the massive desert sand dunes surrounding the lagoon. The drivers take you up steep hills and down steep drops, giving you an epic mix of speed, bumps, and jaw-dropping desert views. After a few runs, it’s time to grab a sandboard and slide down the dunes, sometimes headfirst, sometimes standing up — either way, it’s a total rush.

We booked our tour through a local operator, and it was super easy, well organized, and safe, with helmets, boards, and clear instructions included. Tours usually last 2–3 hours, which is perfect for a morning or afternoon adventure without taking over your whole day.

Cost: Expect to pay around USD $20–$35 per person, which usually includes the dune buggy ride, sandboard rental, and a short briefing.

Tips:

  • Wear sunglasses and sunscreen — the sun reflects off the sand!

  • Bring a water bottle and maybe a snack, since it’s high energy.

  • Go with light clothing and closed shoes — sand gets everywhere!

  • If you want photos, try sitting at the top of the dunes for panoramic desert shots, or snap action shots as you slide down.
