The Palacio de Gobierno in Mérida is one of the city’s most impressive and meaningful landmarks. Located right on Plaza Grande, this historic government building is best known for its large murals that beautifully tell the story of Yucatán’s history, from the ancient Maya civilisation to modern times.

You can wander inside for free(even thought their are scary guards blocking the entrance), making it an easy stop while exploring the city centre. The murals are detailed and powerful, and even a quick visit gives great insight into the region’s culture and past. It’s also a great spot for photos, especially with the plaza and cathedral just outside.

If you’re walking around central Mérida, the Palacio de Gobierno is absolutely worth popping into — cultural, informative, and easy to fit into your day
