If you’re in Quito, visiting the Middle of the World (La Mitad del Mundo) is a must-do experience. This iconic site marks the equator, giving you the fun chance to literally stand with one foot in each hemisphere and the iconic 'egg experiment' - a unique photo opportunity and a bit of hands-on science history.
We loved exploring the monument, learning about the equator’s history, and trying some of the quirky experiments that show the effects of being on the line. There's heaps of small museums, shops and cultural exhibits nearby give extra context about Ecuador’s indigenous history and geography, making it both fun and educational.
We did ours on a tour from Quito but if you visit yourself entrance was fairy reasonable price. Would highly recommend it as a day trip as they take you to a stunning viewpoint of a volcano crater and it includes entrance and local ice creams. If you’re in Quito and want a mix of history, science, and a once-in-a-lifetime photo op, the Middle of the World is definitely worth a stop.
