When you visit the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Oaxaca, expect a richly gilded Baroque church attached to a former convent that now houses the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca; buy the combined ticket so you can see prehispanic artifacts and the beautiful cloister in one stop. Go early to avoid tour groups and get the best light on the ornate altar, and wear comfortable shoes because the church and surrounding streets are cobblestone with steps. Photography without flash is usually allowed but confirm at the desk and be respectful during services. Guided tours and museum staff can give a quick orientation, the plaza outside has cafes and craft stalls for snacks or shopping, and it helps to carry small bills for tickets and purchases and to keep an eye on your belongings in crowds.
