Expect a compact, lively market best seen in the morning when stalls brim with fresh produce and cooks are serving hot snacks; go early for the best selection. Bring small bills and coins because many vendors are cash-only, carry a reusable bag, and keep valuables out of back pockets since pickpockets can work crowded aisles. Try food only from busy, steaming stalls, bargain gently on handicrafts but pay listed prices for prepared food, and always ask before photographing people. Facilities are basic and often close by midafternoon, so plan for water and toilets, and knowing a few Spanish phrases will make buying and bargaining much easier.
