San Juan del Sur completely won us over. This laid-back beach town on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast is full of charm, with colorful streets, a relaxed surf vibe, and sunsets that feel like they were made just for couples.

Things We Loved in San Juan del Sur:

  • TreeCasa – Staying here was such a highlight. The villas are tucked into the hillside with incredible views of the bay, a perfect mix of privacy, nature, and luxury. Waking up to those sunsets was unforgettable.

  • Sunset at the Bay – We loved grabbing a spot on the main beach or one of the beachfront bars to watch the sun dip over the water—it’s easily one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen.

  • Surfing & Beaches – We rented boards and tried surfing at Playa Maderas, just a short drive from town. Even as beginners, the waves were so much fun, and the beach itself is quiet and scenic.

  • Christ of the Mercy Statue – Hiking up to this massive statue gave us panoramic views of the town, coastline, and surrounding hills—totally worth the climb.

  • Local Eats & Cafés – We loved wandering the streets and finding small spots like El Timon for fresh seafood, smoothies, and relaxed beachfront vibes.

  • Nearby Day Trips – Exploring beaches like Playa Hermosa and Playa Yankee added peaceful, off-the-beaten-path moments to our trip.

  • Chill Vibes & Nightlife – The town has a laid-back energy but comes alive at night with bars and live music. Evening drinks by the beach while listening to live bands were the perfect way to end the day.

Tips for Visiting:

  • Best time: November to April for dry weather and consistent waves.

  • Getting there: About 2.5 hours from Managua by shuttle or rental car.

  • Essentials: Swimmers, sunscreen, water shoes for rocky beaches, and cash for small local spots.

San Juan del Sur is the perfect mix of surf, sunsets, and local charm. Between epic views at TreeCasa, quiet beaches, and lively evenings, it’s one of those spots that makes you want to stay longer than planned.
