Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s most magical destinations, known for its misty cloud forests, rich biodiversity, and adventure experiences. Perched high in the mountains, the area feels lush, cool, and totally different from the country’s beaches — think hanging bridges disappearing into the clouds, moss-covered trees, and wildlife everywhere you look.

The main draw here is exploring the cloud forest reserves, where you can walk through suspended bridges, spot howler monkeys, sloths, coatis, and colourful birds, and — if you’re lucky — catch a glimpse of the elusive resplendent quetzal. Guided walks are popular and worth it, as guides are incredible at spotting animals you’d otherwise miss.

Monteverde is also an adventure hub. You can go ziplining through the canopy, night walking tours to see nocturnal wildlife, or simply enjoy the slower pace with coffee tours and viewpoints overlooking the forested valleys. Most activities take half a day, making it easy to mix and match without feeling rushed.

Costs vary depending on what you do, but entrance fees to reserves are usually around USD $25–$30, while activities like ziplining or guided tours range from USD $40–$90. The cooler climate means layers are essential, especially in the mornings and evenings when the clouds roll in.
