One of the coolest historical spots in Antigua Guatemala has got to be the Ruinas de la Antigua Catedral, right in the heart of the city. Walking through the crumbling walls and arches, you really get a sense of the history and the city’s resilience — this cathedral was destroyed in the 1773 earthquake that reshaped Antigua, and the ruins have been preserved (an rebuilt the tops)as a reminder of its past.
This was my favourite part of Antigua, and the best part is not many people even knew about it! All the photos looked epic especially on 0.5, do not miss this spot in Antigua.
We loved exploring the site and imagining what it must have been like back in the day, with massive stone walls, ornate altars, and the old bell towers that once rang across the city. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and feels like stepping into a real-life history lesson without it being overwhelming. There are also plenty of corners and arches perfect for photos, so don’t forget your camera!
Entrance is super affordable, usually a couple of dollars, and it’s right near Parque Central, so you can easily combine it with other Antigua highlights. Tip: go early in the morning to enjoy the ruins with fewer people around and catch the soft morning light hitting the stone. Even if you’re not a history buff, the mix of architecture, history, and atmosphere makes it one of Antigua’s most memorable spots.
