Uyuni was unlike anywhere we’ve ever been. This small town is the gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, and it felt completely otherworldly from the moment we arrived. (PSA dont plan on staying here, this is only a gateway town to the salt flats, there is not much there)
Things loved doing on our tour:
Salar de Uyuni Tour – Walking and driving across the endless white salt flats felt surreal. We couldn’t stop taking photos — the reflections during the wet season were magical.
Incahuasi Island – Climbing the cactus-covered island in the middle of the flats gave us epic panoramic views of the surrounding salt desert.
Train Graveyard – Visiting the old, rusted trains just outside town was unexpectedly cool and made for great photos.
Sunset & Sunrise on the Flats – Watching the sky turn colors over the endless white landscape was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve shared.
Best Hotel:
Hotel Jardines de Uyuni – really nice holel in town with good buffet breakfast, but like I said the real magic is on the salt flat.
Tips for Visiting:
Best time: June–September for dry, reflective salt flats; December–April for water reflections and mirror effect.
Getting there: Overnight buses from La Paz or flights into Uyuni airport.
Essentials: Sunglasses, sunscreen, layers (it gets cold at night), and a camera — you’ll want it for every moment.
