We’d absolutely recommend Mercado Benito Juárez if you’re in Oaxaca de Juárez and want a truly local market experience that shows you the heart of the city. It’s one of the oldest, busiest markets just a block south of the Zócalo, full of colourful stalls selling everything from fresh fruits, veggies and herbs to traditional snacks, mole, mezcal, clothing, textiles and souvenirs you won’t see anywhere else. There’s no entry fee, so you can wander around as much as you like, and prices vary by stall but are generally very affordable if you’re buying produce, snacks or a few local goods. Our tip is to come in the morning buy some gifts for your friends then try the tlayudas or aguas casildas, and bring cash since some vendors prefer it.
