One of the best days we had in Mexico was exploring this incredible neighbourhood, lovely people, great people and amazing street art!
We’d absolutely recommend a visit to Barrio de Jalatlaco if you’re in Oaxaca and love colourful, authentic neighbourhoods where history and art come together. It’s one of Oaxaca’s oldest districts with cobblestone streets and colonial architecture that feels timeless, but what really makes it stand out now is the street art everywhere — you can wander around and discover murals on nearly every corner. Jalatlaco was named one of Mexico’s first “Barrios Mágicos” because of how art and culture have transformed it into an open‑air gallery.
Prices are free to explore, so you can spend as much time as you like walking around and snapping photos. Our tip is to start on Calle Aldama and the surrounding alleys because you’ll find some of the most eye‑catching work there and it’s an easy, relaxed walking route.
Best advice is too have plenty of time to walk around get a few drinks and some food along the way from some of the best food vendors in the world, and enjoy the incredible street art on all the walls, our favourite would have to be the big streamer colour circle in the middle of the neighbourhood.
