Rio Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most breathtaking waterfalls and an absolute must-see! We did a day trip from La Fortuna and were lucky enough to spot coatis, sloths, toucans, and other wildlife along the way. NOTE: the river is usually that surreal Gatorade‑blue when the sun is shining, but heavy rain can turn it brown, so keep the season in mind when planning your visit.
Most tours include hotel pick-up, transportation, a bilingual naturalist guide, park entrance fees, and sometimes lunch. Prices range from US $80–$135 per person depending on inclusions. The hike through Tenorio Volcano National Park is moderate — about 6 km round trip — and takes you through lush rainforest with muddy trails, hanging bridges, bubbling springs, and a steep staircase leading down to the waterfall viewpoint.
Along the way, wildlife is abundant. Keep your eyes open for sloths lounging in the treetops, playful monkeys, colourful toucans and tanagers, snakes, Coati and countless butterflies. Guides are great at spotting animals you might otherwise miss, making the walk even more rewarding.
Some practical tips: buy park tickets in advance, wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and start early to beat crowds and maximize wildlife sightings. Whether you’re chasing that iconic blue water, snapping photos, or just soaking in the rainforest vibes, a Rio Celeste day trip is a full adventure you won’t forget!
