If you’re after a bit of adrenaline and something totally different, volcano boarding in León is an absolute must. You hike up Cerro Negro, a still-active volcano, and the views from the top are insane — you can see miles of volcanic landscape stretching out all around you.
Once you’re at the top, you hop on a wooden board and race down the black ash slopes. It’s fast, messy, and so much fun — expect to get covered in dust, laugh a lot, and maybe scream a little on the way down. There are guides who give you all the gear and tips, so even if it’s your first time, it’s easy to jump in.
The whole experience usually costs around 35–50 USD, including gear and a guide, and most tours pick you up from León or nearby. If you’re in Nicaragua and love adventure, thrills, and a story to tell for years, volcano boarding at Cerro Negro is impossible to beat.
We went with Big Foot Hostel which was the main company to do it with, they gave you a simple dinner and then a party back into town on the bus, which lead into a party in the hostel super fun and would recommend!
