The most iconic hike in Central America! We picked this tour because it was a little more expensive than the others — which usually means fewer people doing it — and we were right! This tour was limited to 12 per group, whereas other groups had 30–40, meaning they started later and took longer. Our group was the first on the trail and the first to summit. It came with cute little A‑frame huts, great food, and an amazing tour guide. Our base camp was the highest on the volcano, so we didn’t have to wake up as early for the sunrise hike. Definitely worth paying the extra dollars for! (FYI you actually sleep on the next door neighbour volcano that's not active, so no worries about it erupting while on the mountain)

Acatenango stands at 3,976 m (13,045 ft) and offers one of the most incredible hiking experiences in Guatemala. The trek is usually done over 2 days, with the first day hiking to base camp through lush forests and volcanic landscapes, and the second day a pre-dawn push to the summit to watch the sunrise over nearby Volcán Fuego, often erupting in a spectacular display of lava and smoke.

Tours typically include transportation from Antigua, camping gear, meals, and a bilingual guide. Prices generally range from US $85–$120 per person for small group tours, with the smaller groups offering a more personal experience and quicker summit timing. Staying at the highest base camp gives you a huge advantage for the sunrise hike — you usually leave around 2–3 AM to reach the top in time.

The hike is challenging: expect steep, rocky trails, cold temperatures at night, and variable weather, so bring layers, sturdy boots, gloves, a hat, and a warm sleeping bag. Along the way, you’ll pass through cloud forests, farmland, and volcanic terrain, with chances to see unique flora and maybe even small wildlife like birds or coatis.

For the best experience, book in advance — tours fill up quickly, especially during the dry season (November–April). The hike is not just about reaching the summit; it’s about camping on a volcano, enjoying the camaraderie of your small group, and witnessing Volcán Fuego erupt against a sunrise backdrop — truly unforgettable.
