What’s a visit to Hanmer Springs without walking up the iconic Conical Hill Lookout for views over the town? The trail is a nice 2.5 km return stroll and not too steep at all. It’s a pretty walk that’ll take you through the big, beautiful pine trees.

The track starts at the end of Conical Hill Road, just a short walk from the village centre. It’s a well-formed, zig-zag path that’s easy for most fitness levels. At the top, you’re rewarded with 360° views over Hanmer Springs, the Hanmer Basin, and the surrounding mountains. There’s a shelter at the summit, perfect for a rest or a picnic.

If you’re keen for a longer adventure, you can extend your walk by linking up with the Te Tihi o Rauhea/Conical Hill Loop Trail, which adds about 3.5 km and takes you through the Heritage Forest and Majuba Track .
