Heads up, this one’s proper backcountry. The trail to Brewster Glacier isn’t marked or maintained, and there have been accidents here, so only tackle it if you’re experienced and kitted out with the right gear. But if you’re up for it, it’s one of the coolest hikes you can do on the South Island.
Starting from Fantail Falls Car Park, you’ll hike about 3 km with 1000 m of elevation gain to Brewster Hut. From there, it’s another 3 km and 450 m climb to get right up close to the glacier itself. Walking right up to a glacier this big, bright, and blue is honestly mind-blowing; it feels like stepping into another world! The ice walls glow in brilliant blues, and the sheer scale is something you just have to see for yourself.
The track is challenging with steep bits and some rock scrambling, plus there are loads of paths and rock stacks to follow, so stay sharp or you might lose your way. I did about 12.7 km total in 7 hours, but trust me, the views make every step worth it. The car park gets busy, so try to arrive early to snag a spot.
Make sure to pack heaps of water, snacks, warm layers, and a first aid kit. And please, don’t attempt this hike if the weather’s wet, it’s alpine backcountry, and conditions can get wild fast. But if you’re ready, Brewster Glacier is an unforgettable adventure you’ll be talking about for ages!
